Hyundai Ioniq 5: The best family EV in Canada

-

The Ioniq 5’s EV-specific platform was engineered to deliver excellent stiffness and a finely tuned ride, with no compromises made to accommodate a gasoline-powered version. The resulting car is an award-winning blend of value, size, style and upscale driving dynamics. Plus, it delivers more headroom, leg room and shoulder room in the rear seats than competitors like the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Nissan Ariya.

The Ioniq 5 also has leading cargo capacity amongst its competition and is happy to haul a roof-mounted cargo box for even more room. It has 2,000 lbs (907 kg) of towing capacity on AWD-equipped models, and up to 5,834 lbs (2,645 kg) from the new-for-2025 Ioniq 5 XRT. That’s a high-capability model batting its eyelashes at EV-curious shoppers who want something on the rugged and adventurous side that’s also ready to tow.

New for 2025: The Ioniq 5 XRT

The Ioniq 5 XRT lays claim to a few firsts: It’s the first Hyundai in Canada built at Hyundai’s Metaplant in Georgia, and it’s also the first Ioniq 5 in Canada to come factory-equipped with a Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, usable at over 17,000 chargers on Tesla’s Supercharger network, no adapter required. According to Hyundai, this doubles the size of the DC fast-charging network available to new Ioniq 5 owners.

In 2025, that makes the Ioniq 5 XRT the only model grade in Canada to ship from the factory with the Tesla-style NACS port. Other 2025 Ioniq 5 models will continue to use the earlier Combined Charging System (CCS) port, which can be used at Tesla charging stations with an adapter, for now.

Ioniq 5 improvements for 2025

Improved battery capacity for the 2025 model year sees targeted range improvements of up to 36 kilometres per charge, depending on the trim grade and wheel size. All models offer improved range in 2025.

Restyled bumpers in front and rear give the Ioniq 5 a fresher, more alert and more planted look on the road. New paint colour and wheel options combine with a rear spoiler for a comprehensive visual makeover while leaving key Ioniq 5 styling elements intact.

Inside, improvements include redesigned climate controls, a new centre console and a new steering wheel design. A rear wiper has been added based on customer feedback, and key parts of the vehicle’s structure have undergone further targeted reinforcements to improve occupant protection and reduce noise levels.

Look for the latest in Hyundai’s safety and connectivity tech for the 2025 model year, including a new sixth-generation infotainment system, standard wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay across the range, and a bevy of newly available safety features including hands-on steering detection, remote smart parking, and all-direction parking collision avoidance.

Is the Ioniq 5 a good car?

According to numerous experts, it’s one of the best, having been named the 2022 World Car of the Year, World Electric Vehicle of the Year, World Car Design of the Year, and also SUV of the Year according to both Motor Trend and Car and Driver in 2022.
