Best Time to Apply
The reason this is the best time to apply, is because you can take advantage of multiple annual credits listed above, while paying the annual fee only once. This is mainly about the airline and Dell credit which will get you an extra $400 in value if you apply now.
You can get a full refund if you cancel your Amex card within 30 days of being charged the annual fee. You will be charged the first annual fee normally around 20+ days after opening the card, which should be in late December of early January. This means that you’ll have your card open at least through January 2026. That gives you time to take advantage of the annual credits for that year as well.
-
Airline Credit
- You get $200 every calendar year. So you can use this credit once in December 2024, then again in 2025, and once more in January 2026 before closing your card. That’s $600 in credits.
- Make sure you select your airline before making a purchase.
- I used these credits for Southwest purchases since flight credits no longer expire
-
Dell Credit
- You get up to $200 in statement credits between January and June, and up to $200 in statement credits between July and December. This means that you can get $200 in 2024, $400 in 2025, and another $200 in 2026. That’s $800 in credits.
- Make sure you enroll for this benefit before making a purchase.
- These purchases earn 1.5X Membership Rewards points.
- You can use this credit for any purchase at Dell. It works even better if you can stack multiple Dell credits, and other offers.
-
Wireless Credit
- You get $10 every month. So by applying now you can use this credit for 14 months. That includes all of 2025, plus December 2023 and January 2026. That’s $140 in credits.
- Make sure you enroll for this benefit before making a purchase.
- Amex Offers
- There are many Amex Offer that expire at the end of the year. So if you apply now you should be able to use them.
Guru’s Wrap-up
