SaaS isn’t dead—It’s transforming » Sisense

Satya Nadella’s recent claim that traditional SaaS is on the brink of obsolescence has sparked important conversations about the future of business applications. While the statement may seem provocative, it highlights an essential truth: the SaaS companies that don’t fully embrace AI will find themselves irrelevant in the near future. But this isn’t the end of SaaS—it’s the beginning of a transformation, where leveraging AI at every level will define the winners.

The idea isn’t that SaaS itself is dying, but that SaaS providers must fundamentally rethink their approach. Applications are no longer just tools; they are becoming intelligent collaborators that anticipate user needs and simplify complex processes. To stay relevant, SaaS platforms must embrace AI throughout their ecosystems—not as an add-on, but as the foundation of how they operate.

The new standard for SaaS: Seamless, intelligent experiences

The expectations for SaaS applications have evolved. Users no longer want static interfaces or passive tools—they want dynamic, intuitive systems that anticipate their needs. Applications must leverage AI to create seamless experiences where users can ask questions, execute tasks, and access insights effortlessly.

Delivering on this promise requires embedding AI throughout every user interaction. Applications should feel natural, like a conversation, while also being proactive. Users expect insights they haven’t thought of, shortcuts to productivity, and the confidence that their tools are always one step ahead. This shift isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s the new baseline for success.

A recent experience with our team perfectly illustrates this shift. We were re-evaluating one of the SaaS tools we rely on when we realized that a simple internal generative AI tool we’d built performed similar tasks at little to no cost. Sure, it lacked the shiny dashboard and dedicated support team, but it gave us on-demand insights through conversational AI that met our immediate needs. Ultimately, we decided to renew our subscription to the SaaS platform—just barely. Their recent introduction of AI tools that offer more intuitive interaction tipped the scales. It’s highly likely that this wasn’t the only renewal they were struggling with –  as a recent G2 report suggests buyers are already looking for AI capabilities baked into their purchases.

This underscores the pressure SaaS providers face to deliver AI-first experiences or risk losing even loyal customers to smarter, faster accessible alternatives.

Reinventing SaaS from the inside

What’s often overlooked in this conversation is how SaaS providers themselves must transform. AI isn’t just a tool for end-users; it’s a tool for builders. SaaS companies that embrace AI throughout their development processes—from coding, to testing, to workflow automation—will outpace competitors stuck in traditional methodologies.

AI empowers app builders to move faster and smarter. It can analyze code, identify inefficiencies, and optimize application performance in ways humans alone cannot. By embedding AI throughout the development process, SaaS companies can iterate rapidly, adapt to changing needs, and create applications that continuously improve. This is the path to not just surviving but thriving in an AI-first era.

The future of SaaS: Built to anticipate

Nadella’s prediction is correct in one sense: SaaS, as we’ve traditionally known it, is being left behind. But it’s not dying; it’s evolving into something far more intelligent and capable. The SaaS platforms that will thrive in the future are those that transform both user experiences and their internal processes by embedding AI throughout.

In this extremely fast-paced, dynamic future, businesses are likely to reduce reliance on point solutions—many of which could be replaced by AI—leaving room for SaaS platforms that take a more holistic approach. Software companies that provide a one-stop shop with AI woven into the platform will be the ones that rise above. Rather than competing on fragmented features, the winners will be those that deeply integrate AI, offering businesses seamless intelligence across their entire workflow.

A clear example of this shift from purely SaaS-based models is to AnPaaS, or “Analytics Platform as a Service.”  Unlike traditional SaaS, AnPaaS incorporates different tools for integrating analytics into a single platform that, necessarily, has AI throughout. Rather than having separate solutions for data modeling, warehousing, ETL, visualization, and embedding, AnPaaS provides a holistic approach that leverages AI in every part of the analytics-building process. It allows users to model data with the help of an AI assistant, query that data, generate dashboards using natural language, and embed those dashboards using AI-generated code.

AI-driven analytics, like Sisense’s conversational interface, are transforming applications from static tools into intelligent collaborators that anticipate user needs and deliver insights instantly.

This shift isn’t just technological; it’s a mindset. Companies that fully integrate AI at every level will set the new standard for innovation, creating analytics-infused applications that feel alive, insightful, and indispensable. SaaS isn’t dead—it’s evolving. And for those willing to embrace AI throughout their ecosystems, the possibilities are limitless.
